A boat can travel 12.6 km upstream in 54 min. If the speed of the water current is 1/8th of the speed of the boat in still water, how much distance (in km) the boat can travel downstream in 35 min?
Correct Answer: Description for Correct answer:
The speed of the boat in upstream
\( \frac{126}{54} \times 60 = 14 km/h \)
Let the speed of the boat in still water = x km/h
Speed of current = \( \frac{x}{8} \)
\( x - \frac{x}{8} = 14\)
7x = 14 x 8
x = 2 x 8 = 16 km/h
The speed of the boat in down stream
\( 18 \times \frac{35}{60} = 10.5 km\)
