Two numbers are in the ratio of 3 : 5. If 9 be subtracted from each, then they are in the ratio of 12 : 23. Find the second number.

Let the two numbers be = x and y

The ratio of two numbers = 3 : 5

If 9 be subtracted from each they are in ratio of 12 : 23

=> \( \large\frac{x - 9}{y - 9} = \frac{12}{23}\)

=>23(x-9)=12(y-9)

=> 23x - 207 = 12y - 108

=>23\( \left( \frac{3}{5}y \right) \) - 207 = 12y-108

=> \( \large\frac{69}{5}y  - 207 = 12y - 108\)

=> 69y - 1035 = 60y - 540

=> (69 - 60)y =1035 – 540

=>9y=495

y= \( \large\frac{495}{9}\)

The second number = 55.
