A mixture of milk and water in a jar comprises 12 litre of milk. If 5 litre of pure milk and 3 litre of pure water were added to this jar. the pertentage of water in the new mixture would be 20%. What was the initial quantity of water in the jar? (in litre)

A) 5

B) 4

C) 2

D) 6

E) 3

Correct Answer:
D) 6

Description for Correct answer:
Let the initial quantity of water in the jar = x litre

According to question,

\( \Large \frac{15 + 5}{ x + 3} \) = \( \Large \frac{80}{20} \)

=> \( \Large \frac{20}{x + 3} \) = 4 => x + 3 = 5

x = 2 litre

Comments

I did not understand why 15 was written instead of 12 which was mentioned in the question. With 12 we are getting a fraction 5/4. So the question has wrong information about initial content of milk.
