Two numbers are in the ratio 2 : 3. If 9 is added to each number, they will be in the ratio 3 : 4. What is the product of the two numbers?

A) 360

B) 480

C) 486

D) 512

Correct Answer:
C) 486

Description for Correct answer:

Let the number be X and Y.

According to the question

\( \Large \frac{X}{Y}=\frac{2}{3} \)

=> 3X=2Y

=> 3X-2Y=0 .....(i)

and \( \Large \frac{X+9}{Y+9}=\frac{3}{4} \)

=> 4X+36=3Y+27

=> 4X-3Y=-9 .......(ii)

Multiplying Eq.(i) by 4 and Eq.(ii) by 3 and substracting,we get

12X-8Y=0

12X-9Y=-27

Y=27

Now,putting =27 in Eq.(i) we get.

3X=54

=> X=18

Product of the given numbers.

=\( \Large 27\times18 \) =486
